No 8: Tamdhu Distillery

The Management Committee are delighted to announce the eighth in our exclusive collection of Keepers of the Quaich unique Scotch Whisky bottlings. Keeper of the Quaich Gordon Dundas, of Ian Macleod Distillers, and Tamdhu Distillery Manager Sandy McIntyre walks us through this unique tasting.

This bottling has been chosen from a small selection of handpicked cask samples by Sandy McIntrye the distillery manager at Tamdhu distillery. The spirit was filled into a first fill ex Oloroso sherry hoggie on 24^th February 2009 and bottled 19^th August 2023.

The spirit has not been chill filtered and has been bottled at 52% which has been reduced from 67.7% cask strength. The outturn of the cask yielded 370 bottles.

Tamdhu 2009 - Cask 1028

The eighth bottling has been chosen from a small selection of handpicked cask samples by Sandy McIntrye the Distillery Manager at Tamdhu Distillery. The spirit was filled into a first fill ex Oloroso sherry hoggie on 24^th February 2009 and bottled 19^th August 2023.

Colour: Highly polished mahogany.

Nose: Bold and concentrated. A crepuscular density which mixes coffee grounds, liquorice oxidised Oolong, candied walnuts, and light cereal. A treacle-like element steadily darkens into molasses. There’s a graceful nod towards Armagnac (its the prunes) as well an amaro-like bitter twist. What a Rob Roy this would make. Keep water on the side.

Palate: An intriguing off-dry start. The tannins are supple allowing the sweet core to be the dominant player. The walnuts are back, as are the prunes, along with crème de mûres, Kola Kubes, and cherries galore.

Finish: Tangy, bitter orange peel.

This bottling will be sold on the Royal Mile Whiskies website at £200, including UK VAT and be sold strictly on a 'first-come, first-served' basis.

The Society politely requests that bottles are not resold.
