Benson Chen

Chairman, Liquid Gold Corporation, Hong Kong

Benson Chen was born in Hong Kong, but when he went to Toronto to study business, his eyes were opened to the world of Scotch Whisky.

He says: “I was used to drinking fine wines and Cognac back home in Hong Kong, but my first taste of Scotch was a 12 year old Macallan – which was a real turning point for me.

“I always knew I wanted to start a drinks business once I had graduated, but I hadn’t factored in Scotch Whisky. I began collecting bottles and then my hobby turned into a business.”

The Liquid Gold Corporation was founded in 2008 and filled a gap in the market for retailing fine wines and rare whiskies. Benson was always confident that it would succeed, as he knew what was missing in the marketplace.

In 2020, after a long working relationship with Edrington, the two companies collaborated on a venture which would open as The Macallan House in Hong Kong. The store was a huge success and another opened in late 2023, this time in China itself.

“I am noticing a shift in whisky drinking. More and more young people are turning to Scotch Whisky, especially young women. Many love the style associated with the brands, but also love the idea that a bottle can appreciate in value and so are buying as an investment.

“I really appreciate being made a Keeper of the Quaich, and it is made all the more special as this is my first time in Scotland and I already love it. It is a lifetime commitment and I feel very honoured.”
